fantasy football expert draft 2009
Well Lions fans tried to get the organization to draft Aaron Curry singing his name in the presentation of the Lions new logo earlier this week, but not enough to change his mind. Matthew Stafford was signed yesterday by the Detroit Lions for a six-year contract that could include up to $ 78 million and $ 41.7 guaranteed.
I wanted to publish my thoughts about the situation because I am a Lions fan and very knowledgeable about the situation. Personally, I think Curry would have been a better choice because of his obvious talent, but also because of their leadership skills and the amount of money he was willing to sign. They had a historically bad defense last year, and find someone like Curry, he could fly around the field and making deals everywhere as demonstrated the ability to do it would be very valuable. They have a large set in the heart of their defense that could have filled and have also provided much needed leadership. Each scout and draft expert I've heard raving about his exceptional leadership skills, and was widely regarded as the safest choice in the project. Also, I was willing to sign for $ 10 million less in Stafford.
When your team has not won a game all season last year, must get your selection to the team's morale as soon as possible. Curry would have provided the best opportunity to improve your team now and also change the culture of their team for the future. The economy is bad game in Detroit and recently has made it difficult for them to fill the seats, which would make even more sense to pick Curry which would have less money. I am sure that he wanted a new face for the franchise, but not always have to be a quarterback, Ray Lewis and Brian Urlacher have been the faces of their franchises for years successfully. Just do not trust the Lions office with this decision.
Although not always a supporter of making the Pick sure, the amount of money invested here leaves no margin for error. I understand that the quarterback is the most important position on a computer, but the best teams defensive whenever the playoffs and that is where teams can get the best value in the first round along with offensive tackles. Bill Parcells is the perfect example of a general manager that projects defense and offensive tackle (ie, DeMarcus Ware, Marcus Spears, Jake Long, Ty Law, Teddy Bruschi, James Farrior, Pepper Johnson). The NFL is very unpredictable and therefore makes it unrealistic for teams to turn around his luck if they have the right people making personnel decisions. The Miami Dolphins were 1-15 years to playoffs past, and many teams like Atlanta and Arizona have been able to turn around franchises recently.
I'm sure many other supporters of the Lions, as I have hopes of making a similar change, however it appears that this draft selection that re-building process will take more time now. If the project defense the rest of the way we may be able to justify this selection but it seems they will have to be fortunate enough to have quality defensive players in the board with your choice of others in the first round (# 20) and second-round high.
From a fantasy perspective, this movement should not have a big impact of this year from Stafford is likely to feel at least half of his rookie season barring any injuries to Daunte Culpepper. However, the numbers Calvin Johnson, even could improve a lot more if Stafford ends up living up to their potential to have a rocket-arm and the Lions to find someone to protect him.
