Starfantasysports.com: 07/04/2007 – A Look at Japanese players not named Dice-k
Every day I'll be looking for more of the actions and trends of previous baseball games to help you make informed decisions on their list of fantasy baseball. Here are some players in action yesterday:
Jacobs putting last year behind him in April. Last year, Mike Jacobs had a putrid April, reaching only 0.192 and almost lost his job at first base. This year, Jacobs is enjoying his April so far, batting .412 with three extra hits in 17 AB. At the age of 26, this can be his year off, but of course there are some red flags. Jacobs has deemed the trend more than we wanted, it will affect his batting average and production human resources. Last year he started taking more walks, which is a positive step toward the plate discipline. So far, it has only two strikeouts this year, which is a very encouraging sign. The power is real, but you can take that final step? It looks good so far, but if the list, you must monitor his strikeouts, which will be key of rupture. If he can punch more than 18% of the time, going to be a solid fantasy player.
Make a solid transition Iwamura of Japan. While Dice-K may be getting a majority of the press (and rightly so), another Japanese player is giving way to the head Akinori Iwamura. Iwamura was 4 for 4 yesterday at night, including a solo homer, his first in the majors and currently sports a .636 average. So much was spent Iwamura? During his last three years in Japan, he hit 30 or more HR and batted .300 or better. It will be interesting to see how his batting average for transfers, since attacked the police a bit in Japan, but walk a lot, and that includes both good plate discipline and poor. Until now it has 0 strikeouts and two walks. You can probably expect that about 20 HR this year, but will have to control their discipline at the plate, which is the key to their transition. Stash him on your bench if you can.
Oliver Perez seeks to regain the form in 2004. Oliver Perez looked like a young stud on the rise after 2004 years, but came down complete the last two years. Perez took his first step forward last night, going 7 innings, striking out 6 while allowing only five hits, one run and one Very impressive ZERO walks. walk and very high home run total is what convicted him in the past, but his strikeout rate has stayed is still excellent. One's career gave up last night was a homerun, so you still have problems there, but not allowing a free pass is a big step in the right direction. It is more probable found on many waiver wires, so should you take the risk? Arggh …. The choice depends on you. You know the risk and reward. One output does not change the past 2 years, but it is hard to ignore how well the 2004 season would be his team this year. I am a risk taker, so I'll grab it. Keep their fingers crossed.
Moseley fields and in place of injured Weaver. Jared Weaver, with still rehabbing from his injury, Dustin Moseley has start and pitched well. Moseley went six innings, only giving a 5 hits, 1 run and walked none and struck out four. Is it worth a place on your list? The answer is a resounding no … at least for now. Since 2004, Moseley has posted a 4.60 ERA north in all its campaigns AAA. There are some positive signs however. Since 2004, Moseley has lowered its rate to walk while raising his strikeout rate, finally reaching this important 2-1 strikeout to walk ratio last year. It took two years to find AA, so maybe it's the same case for AAA. In any case, more than likely have only one more start before being sent to Weaver. Avoid at this time until we see more consistency at both levels.
Kaz Matsui showing signs of life. After his lackluster performance in New York, Kaz Matsui, imports of Japanese star was deemed a failure by many. When he got traded to Colorado and spent some time in the minors, was called up late last year and played well, batting .345 and slugging .504 with eight stolen bags in only 113 AB. Its success has led to more than earlier this year, with Matsui going April 3 last night, raising his average to .462 on the year (in slugging .615), while also passing the two bags. While he does not walk as much as we would like see in a base stealer, solid contact is made, which is essential for anyone with speed. He also scored on a shallow 2B position. He definitely deserves your full attention at this point and could very well this year version of Brandon Phillips. If you have a need at second base or if you need some speed, most likely is that the best option in the choice and worth the risk. There are upside down here.
