fantasy football starters week 3
2009 Indianapolis Colts Fantasy Football Preview
The year 2008 was kind of a year down the Indianapolis Colts. For the moment, sixth in his career, Peyton Manning was done in the playoffs and lost 23-17 to the San Diego Chargers in the Wildcard round. In addition, last year was something of a bad year for statistically Manning despite winning their third league MVP award and witnessed first hand what it is like having a QB that is trying to shake the rust lesions after off season knee. Manning heated end of the year but unfortunately many owners did not have the supporting cast he had to defend the fort down and therefore lost in the playoff game. In fact, my experience last year, Manning has soured me on Tom Brady this year. You simply can not afford to play without a quarterback during the first 4 or 5 games of the season and that's what we endured last year. In addition, Brady's injury said to be far more serious than that of Manning was a year ago. The Colts will be good, but will make the playoffs? I'm not so sure as it is already strong Tennessee and Jacksonville and Houston are both ready to be much better this upcoming season. But again this is fantasy so I'm going to focus my energy on players Colts position and what they offer in terms of fantasy potential in 2009.
As mentioned Manning had one of his best outings statistics his career but he did enough to get his third league MVP award. I lived and died with Manning during the first 6-7 weeks before he finally started to warm up in the line final. The Colts are heading into a major transformation this year as head coach Tony Dungy has retired and been replaced by Jim Caldwell and two other prominent members of its staff, offensive coordinator Tom Moore and offensive line coach Howard Mudd is expected to retire due to changes in the NFL pension policies. Moore would Manning a great loss for representing only the offensive coordinator who has worked in the NFL. However, despite all the turmoil in the coaching staff and the exit Marvin Harrison to look for Manning to continue his assault on records move from the NFL. Why? For starters, Manning is that good and still has most their weapons at their disposal, including Reggie Wayne, Anthony Gonzalez and Dallas Clark. Moreover, another important variable for Manning this year is that center Jeff Saturday will be healthy. Ahhh I know what you are saying. "What could possibly be a performance center with fantasy? TONS !!!!! vi years most games the Colts one last time and it was painfully obvious that the whole offensive line was completely out of sink in the absence of Saturday and lead to a lack of continuity and rhythm of the offense together. The Colts did not have it easy this year. The AFC South has improved significantly compared to previous years. You know Tennessee is solid, but Jaguars and Texans both seem to be much better this year and the Texans, in particular, specifically over its years of defense after years in a effort to stop all Manning and the Colts. Expect Manning this year to send their usual numbers in 2009 of about 4000-4500 yards passing and TD 30-35. You Manning looking to be the second or third QB taken this summer behind Drew Brees somewhere in the middle of Round 2.
Joseph Addai is a joke. I thought Addai has been overrated from the start in the NFL in 2006 and now more or less think it just sucks. The Colts were obviously hoping that Addai would be the next Edgerrin James, but has not even come up to that standard. To begin with, is prone to injury and it seems that he really did not want to play with pain. On the other hand, Addai fades far too many games for my taste, leaving Dominic Rhodes (who has since moved to Buffalo) to do the dirty work. If you remember that's exactly what happened in the Super Bowl against the Bears a few years ago. Rhodes was clearly the main back n the game and I think it's funny, because this year someone, inevitably, the project Addai of high simply because he is a RB. WHAT ?????? Again, read my article "Early Draft RB? Buyer Beware" for some idea why it's not a good idea. Apparently, I'm not the only one not sold Joseph as the Colts used their first-round pick in the stud RB Donald Brown Connecticut. Brown immediately intervene and split at least if not carried over, and Addai to be quite frank I hope to be the more polished end of the year again. Personally, I think Addai is only one number three in the back or a Flex option for 2009 but you can mark my words he will be gone in most project no later than the 3rd opening round. I could be wrong but I doubt it. As for Brown, keep an eye on him in the middle rounds and not be afraid to take a chance on him this year. Why?? Well, let me tell Chris Johnson, Matt Forte and Steve Slaton. Nuff said.
Obviously, all Colts receivers are solid fantasy options. Wayne is a number 1 WR and secure is a model of consistency much the same way Harrison was for so many years. Although Wayne is solid not recognize that you select ahead of the following receivers: Larry Fitzgerald, Calvin Johnson, Andre Johnson or Randy Moss. This is the cream harvest in terms of receivers in the NFL these days, but if you go a different route on draft day and get some early RB may be looking at people as Wayne, Steve Smith, Greg Jennings, Marques Colston or their number one WR. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, but do not expect Wayne to be a Fitz and Megatron in terms of his big play ability.
Be careful with Gonzalez this year. The first product of Ohio State is heading into his third NFL season is historically when many receivers explode. Add to the equation that Harrison is gone and you realize that could be the year '09 Gonzo. Gonzalez looking to break the patio 1000 plateau this year for the first time to pop it in the end zone 8-10 times. Those numbers would make a good number two fantasy wide though the day the draft does not give you much respect. Not yet. Within a year may be completely different as we may be talking about Gonzalez in the capacity of studs. For now, Gonzo treatment as a number 3 WR with a lot of head and expect it to go around the midpoint of the majority of projects this summer, probably around the seventh to eighth round. The Colts also drafted WR Austin Collie Brigham Young University in the 4th round pick this year. Keep an eye on Collie and essentially fills the role of Gonzalez A couple of years ago when he first broke into the league.
Dallas Clark is still today one of the elite TE in the NFL, along with Jason Witten, Antonio Gates and Tony Gonzalez. Not much to say here about Clark. A safe option number one fantasy that will continue to capture all kinds of passes, Manning and well worthy of the fifth-sixth round selection that is needed to ensure its services in the fall.
Adam Vinatieri is a number 1 fantasy kicker based on his reputation plays in a dome, and the Colts to score lots of points. That's more or less my equation kickers and always represent my final selection of projects. The Colts DST is intriguing because of Bob Sanders, Dwight Freeney and and can be used in a pinch, depending on the match. However, in terms of nabbing one week after week from summer there are much better options to this point that the Colts. Next: Houston Texans
